The Race that saved
by John Jerrard

This is the story of the New Cutty Sark, a replica of the famous Cutty Sark that has been beautifully preserved in her museum in Greenwich, London and how, in 2045 the British Government had funded the project to build her and to compete in the great clipper race that was to be held to commemorate the Agee of Sail. The stated object of the race was to encourage the construction of sailing ships of different periods to preserve the shipbuilding skills and seamanship that were known to the builders and sailors of old and were in danger of becoming completely lost in a world dominated by automation, a world in which individual achievement was fast disappearing. The story is told by an old man who, in the last years of the 21st century looks back at his life and recalls the adventures of his youth and the remarkable race through the great South Sea which brought the news of the looming disaster in the Antarctic.
